MAKING DESERT ROCKS

1. THUMBNAILING
This is how I write the script... not by typing plain text but laying down images and text at the same time. These pages are very small, around 15 cm X 7 cm. The purpose of this part is to decide the flow of the images and the text, and the reason these thumbnails are so small is because it's easier to think when I see the whole layout as a small image, and also I don't end up writing too much text on one page.

2. FIRST PENCIL SKETCHES
I use an A4 -size paper. Everything can still change at this point and often does. If I've decided to update, say, four pages, I work on all of them simultaneously. This is the hardest part, if things don't go smoothly here, they won't go smoothly during the following phazes either.

3. WHEN TOO MUCH PENCILING GETS ON MY NERVES,
I often relax by inking the finished parts. The good thing about inking is that that you don't have to think while doing it. You can just let your mind wander and... ink.

4. MORE INKING
First I use a black felt pen to draw the outlines...

5. ...AND AFTER THE OUTLINES ARE IN PLACE,
I use a brush pen (or whatever happens to be at hand, I prefer brush pen) to add the heavier lines, shadows and other dark surfaces. This is what it looks like right after scanning the image in.
